April 17, 2013 - Ndere Center

On nearly our last day here in Kampala, we were treated by Mulago Hospital and Makerere University to a night at the Ndere Center. The Ndere Center is a cultural center, which focuses on dances and music from around Uganda. The dances are based on culture and history from the different tribes and districts around Uganda; therefore, each dance had a different costume and theme. The costumes were gorgeous and the music was lively and entertaining. I'm not sure how the dancers were able to carry on for nearly three hours of intense dancing; it looked like quite the work-out!

At one point, the hosts requested volunteers and, of course, I raised my hand. Somehow, we were also able to convince Mike to participate. There was also one other man and woman (though not married) who participated. We had a brief interview about finding romance in our respective countries (where the woman from London said that the guy had to buy the girl lots of expensive gifts...) and were then taught a few dance steps by our hosts and had to dance in front of everyone. I'm pretty sure Mike and I were so good that we outshone the dancers that evening... (haha, right...).

At the very end of the show, everyone go up out of their seats and joined the entire company to dance around and play musical instruments. Overall, it was a very fun night and a really neat cultural experience!
